UVC light-emitting diodes with ceramic/quartz substrates
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduces two new ceramic/quartz-based UVC (short-wave ultraviolet) light-emitting diodes, the VLMU35CR40-275-120 and the VLMU35CR41-275-120, for sterilization in medical, industrial, and consumer electronics applications.Vishay Semiconductors VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 provide higher light intensity than previous-generation solutions while reducing costs and enabling efficient sterilization with longer life.
The device was released with a typical light power of 37 mW at 250 mA, a mW/$ price/performance ratio that is 30 % higher than that of low-power light-emitting diodes and 12 times better than previous-generation solutions. In addition, the VLMU35CR41-275-120 has a minimum light power of 30 mW at 250 mA, which is comparable to the light intensity of a close competitor at 350 mA.
The light-emitting diode wavelength range of 265 nm to 280 nm, with a typical wavelength of 274 nm, not only makes the devices suitable for direct surface, air and still water disinfection, but also improves the disinfection efficiency of the VLMU35CR40-275-120 and the VLMU35CR41-275-120 by up to 20% compared to 280 nm solutions. The devices are available in a small, thermally superior 3.45 mm x 3.45 mm x 1.7 mm surface-mount package with a ceramic substrate and quartz window, 250 mA, and up to 27,000 hours of lifetime at 25 °C.
Based on AlGaN technology, the VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 are specifically designed to replace low-voltage UVC mercury lamps, and are particularly well suited for miniaturized and compact device designs. Typical end products include earplugs, toothbrushes, water bottles, refrigerators, air purifiers, door handles, medical devices, coffee makers, ATMs, toilet seats, vacuum cleaners, and a variety of other sanitizing devices.
The devices have DC forward currents up to 300 mA, forward voltages as low as 5.2 V, and an emission angle of ± 60°. The VLMU35CR40-275-120 and VLMU35CR41-275-120 are RoHS- and Vishay Green-compliant, halogen-free, and suitable for reflow soldering, with moisture sensitivity ratings up to the J-STD-020 standard Class 3.
