High-precision data acquisition front-end IC AS8510
Austriamicrosystems has launched the high-precision data acquisition front-end IC AS8510 to meet the needs of automotive battery current, voltage and temperature measurement applications
This new flexible sensor interface IC offers many advantages over other solutions, such as the first 16-bit, dual-channel ADC+PGA architecture with offset and noise less than 1 LSB. The AS8510 is highly configurable and the system can be adjusted to meet various needs, making the system suitable for various battery management applications now and in the future. Using a "system basis chip" from ams and a microcontroller, the AS8510 provides a complete high-side or low-side battery sensor semiconductor solution for less than $2.80.
The AS8510 data acquisition front-end IC includes 2 channels of 16-bit ADC independent analog input channels, and each channel has an independent programmable sampling rate. Each channel also has a low-drift programmable gain amplifier to handle +/- 160 mV signals, or the PGA can be bypassed to handle 0V to 1V signals. Therefore, battery current changes from mA to kA can be measured through a 100 μΩ current-sense resistor. The highly linear sigma-delta architecture and wide sampling rate of the AS8510 provide flexible support for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Its offset auto-zero function (available on both channels) allows high-accuracy measurements using low-value sense resistors (as low as 100 μΩ) with negligible losses. Moreover, AS8510 also includes a variety of working modes, such as the current monitoring function in low-power standby mode, which can realize autonomous wake-up.
Manfred Brandl, Product Manager Automotive Sensor Interface and SBC ASSP at austriamicrosystems, said: "The rapid growth of the battery-powered equipment and electric vehicle markets is increasing the need for more accurate and efficient power management. The AS8510 provides designers with a variety of applications. The highest precision and flexibility required. In addition, the AS8510, together with a LIN auxiliary IC from ams and a low-cost microcontroller, can shorten the time-to-market of automotive applications and provide a more competitive solution for the rapidly developing market. price and better performance."
When used in conjunction with current shunt sensors in 12V systems, the AS8510 can either be connected to the battery ground or to the positive power supply using a dedicated level shifter IC. The device can also be used as a general-purpose sensor interface for accurate measurement of small signals. Fully differential inputs enable the AS8510 to capture common-mode differential signals 300mV above ground and 160mV below ground. Its dual-channel architecture enables digital error correction techniques such as "sigma-delta" frequency division, or captures the bridge current voltage with subsequent error correction by an external microcontroller. In addition, the AS8510 consumes only 40 μA in standby mode.
The AS8510 high-precision data acquisition device can be configured for differential synchronous dual-channel operation, or multiplexed as two single-ended channels plus a differential channel for sequential measurements. In addition to measuring current and voltage, the AS8510 enables accurate temperature measurement via an internal sensor or an external temperature sensor powered by an on-chip 250µA current source. AS8510 includes an internal high-precision reference source, integrated digital low-pass filter, on-chip precision oscillator and 4-wire SPI interface.
The AS8510 is packaged in SSOP20 with an operating voltage of 3.3V and an operating ambient temperature of -40 to 125°C.
