Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduces the VCNT2030, a new reflective optical sensor for industrial, computer, consumer and mobile applications. Compared to the previous generation of solutions, the VCNT2030 from Vishay Semiconductors is more space-efficient, with a higher current transfer ratio (CTR) and lower power consumption, resulting in improved performance. ratio (CTR), longer sensing distance, and lower power consumption than the previous generation solution, resulting in improved performance.

The product is configured with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and silicon phototransistor in a 1.85 mm x 1.2 mm x 0.6 mm miniature surface-mount package.

The recently released device features a compact construction with the emission source and detector in the same plane. Due to the VCSEL's narrow  17 emission angle, it offers excellent internal crosstalk rejection, which also improves proximity performance behind cover glass. The analog output signal of the VCNT2030 phototransistor is dependent on the amount of light emitted by the VCSEL and reflected from objects in the sensor's field of view. The device has a sensing distance of 15 mm, three times that of close competitors on the market.

Due to its compact size, the VCNT2030 saves more than 40 percent of PCB space compared to previous-generation devices, enabling the sensor to be used as a space-saving optical switching solution in industrial infrastructure, home and building controls, laptops and desktop computers, home appliances, consumer electronics, and metrology applications; for motorized bicycles, golf carts, tractor and harvester motor optical encoding for motor control in electric bicycles, golf carts, tractors and harvesters; and paper detection in printers and scanners. In these applications, the device's VCSEL's low 8 mA drive current is sufficient to provide the same performance as solutions utilizing 20 mA infrared emitters, resulting in significantly lower power consumption.

The sensor has a detection range of 0.3 mm to 6 mm, an emission wavelength of 940 nm and a typical output current of 2.5 mA, which means a typical CTR of up to 31 % under test conditions. This value is more than 100 % higher than the previous generation of solutions and the closest competitor sensors. The device has a reflow moisture sensitivity level (MSL) of 3 according to J-STD-020. It is RoHS compliant, halogen-free, and meets Vishay's Green Standard.
