PROFET™ + 12V Provides Ultra-Low Resistance Switches for Automotive Applications
To address the problem of relays and fuses not being able to meet the requirements of modern E/E automotive architectures, Infineon Technologies AG introduces a new generation of ultra-low resistance high-side switch family series Power PROFET™ + 12V in a TO lead-free package.
The Power PROFET™ + 12V series supports new mounting locations and enclosure options to help realize a new generation of high-efficiency decentralized power architectures. Available in two models, the BTS50005-1LUA with 0.6 mΩ on-resistance (RDS(ON)) and the BTS50010-1LUA with 1.0 mΩ on-resistance (RDS(ON)), the series offers the industry's lowest power dissipation. They are designed for high-current applications such as controlling heaters, pumps, and fans, especially in hot cabin and engine compartment environments where high inrush currents are required. They can also be switched more than 1 million times, far more than the average 200,000 switching cycles of relays.
The switches replace electromechanical relays, fuses and discrete circuits in distribution boxes and other applications up to 65 A in 12 V electrical systems. In addition, the switches feature a variety of built-in protection and diagnostic functions, such as short-circuit, over-current and over-temperature protection. As a result, these semiconductor devices not only offer comprehensive protection, but also provide the connected microcontroller with fault signals via diagnostic pins to perform advanced diagnostics on the power distribution module. Thanks to their robustness as well as their protection and diagnostic functions, these two switches protect against faults in the power distribution network, thus increasing the reliability of the entire vehicle.
Both smart power switches are available in an 8-pin TO lead-free package that requires 23% less board space than the traditional D2PAK package, yet has similar thermal performance to the D2PAK. Load current detection accuracy has been improved to 5% and can be evaluated by reading the analog voltage on the IS pin. In addition, the series is PRO-SIL™ ISO 26262 certified and comes with safe usage instructions to support evaluation of ISO 26262-compliant hardware components.
To simplify the design introduction process for Power PROFET™ +12V devices, the series has been integrated into the Infineon Smart Switch Built-in Fuse tool and the Infineon Smart Power Switch kILIS tool, and both are available from the Infineon Developer Center. The Infineon Smart Switch Built-in Fuse tool supports the calculation of the fuse characteristics based on the embedded overtemperature protection of the selected product under specific boundary conditions. kILIS tool is used to calculate and visualize the current sense range of the selected product for a specific load current, taking into account the kILIS rate, the current sense resistance and the ADC tolerance.
