Ultra-small real-time clock chip with built-in crystal oscillator

2023-08-18 17:20:43

STMicroelectronics released the world's smallest crystal oscillator and real-time clock (RTC) M41T62 chip with time, calendar and alarm clock functions. In a package as small as the smallest crystal on the market today, STMicroelectronics has successfully integrated the smallest real-time clock die and matching crystal to create the world's smallest ultra-low-power real-time clock measuring only 3.2 x 1.5mm 2-in-1 chip with crystal oscillator.

The M41T62 is especially suitable for battery-operated portable product designs. The low operating voltage of 1.3V to 4.4V allows this clock chip to be directly powered by a lithium battery, and the operating current is only 350nA. Many highly integrated microcontrollers have an on-chip real-time clock, but these chips are usually limited in functionality and require the addition of an external crystal. Unlike designs with microcontrollers or discrete solutions, this integrated solution solves the problem of matching the crystal oscillator to the real-time clock, which can sometimes be quite tricky.

"Putting this advanced real-time clock in such a small crystal package brings an optimal The real-time clock solution. The new product not only saves space, realizes optimized power consumption, but also can be directly charged by the lithium battery. This complete solution solves the problem of matching the crystal oscillator and the real-time clock, which is a headache for designers."

The M41T62 also simplifies product design. A stable 32kHz signal can be generated at power-on to ensure reliable startup of today's processors and subsystems such as Bluetooth modules. Other features that enhance design and system performance include oscillator failure detection (OFD), which helps systems detect power failures. Features such as shutdown time stamping and weak battery detection are included without adding external components to the microcontroller's real-time clock. The M41T62 also meets UL certification standards and has a built-in reverse diode.

For those functions that rely on data logging, time stamping services, interval monitoring or synchronization systems, the M41T62 improves system performance. Such as SLR digital camera, GPS receiver, portable multimedia player, card reader, portable medical monitoring equipment (such as blood glucose meter).
