Tiny-Package, Ultra-Low IQ Power Management IC for nRF52/nRF53 Series SoCs and Other Compatible Products
Nordic Semiconductor's first power management IC (PMIC) product, the nPM1100. nPM1100® combines a USB-compatible input regulator with overvoltage protection, a 400mA battery charger, and a 150mA DC/DC buck regulator in a 2.075x2.075mm wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP). nPM1100® is a complete power management IC (PMIC) that offers a wide range of power management features. regulator; a 400mA battery charger and a 150mA DC/DC buck regulator. The PMIC ensures reliable power and stable operation of Nordic's nRF52® and nRF53® family of multi-protocol system-on-chips (SoCs) and maximizes application battery life. The product can also be used as a general-purpose PMIC for any application using rechargeable Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries. nPM1100 has an extremely compact form factor, making it ideal for advanced wearables, connected medical devices, and other space-constrained applications.
Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) applications designed with the nRF52 and nRF53 family of SoCs and using rechargeable Li-ion/Li-Po batteries can utilize the nPM1100's battery charger while bypassing the SoC's first regulator stage. Additionally, when used in this configuration, the high efficiency of the nPM1100 buck regulator reduces overall system power consumption, while its 150mA current capability increases the current available for other system components from approximately 10mA to 100mA.
The nPM1100 has an ultra-low quiescent current (IQ) of 700nA (typical), which can be further reduced to 470nA in "ship mode". nPM1100 also disables the power supply outputs in "ship mode", eliminating the need for an external power switch and ensuring that battery life is minimized for products in transit. minimizes the impact of battery life on products in transit. The power management solution occupies as little as 23 mm2 of PCB area, including passive components (27 mm2 when optimized for performance), far less than competitive products.
The nPM1100 input regulator supplies power from a 4.1 to 6.6V USB input or from a 2.3 to 4.35V connected battery input. It provides applications with unregulated voltages from 3.0 to 5.5V at up to 500mA output current. nPM1100 supports USB standard downstream port (SDP), downstream charging port (CDP), and dedicated charger port (DCP) detection. nPM1100 input regulator is designed for use with the USB standard downstream port (SDP), downstream charging port (CDP) and dedicated charger port (DCP). The input regulator includes overvoltage protection to provide up to 20V transient voltage spike protection.
The nPM1100 PMIC's JEITA-compatible battery charger charges the application's Li-ion/Li-Po batteries with resistor-selectable 20 to 400mA charge current and selectable 4.1 or 4.2V termination voltage. The charger features battery overheat protection and can automatically select from three charging modes: auto trickle, constant current and constant voltage modes, and this charger also features discharge current limiting.
The nPM1100's high-efficiency DC/DC buck regulator operates at over 90% efficiency with a load current of less than 100µA. It draws its power from the input system regulator and delivers up to 150mA of current at a selectable stabilized output voltage of 1.8V, 2.0V, 2.7V or 3.0V. The regulator has a soft-start function and can automatically switch between hysteresis and pulse width modulation (PWM) modes. It also supports forced PWM mode to ensure the cleanest possible power operation.
The nPM1100 does not require configuration software to operate, as all settings are pin configurable. The PMIC is compatible with all devices designed to operate over the range of output voltages and supply currents that the chip can provide, with an operating temperature range of -40 to 85˚C.
The nPM1100 signifies Nordic's commitment to building a range of PMIC products," said Geir Kjosavik, Nordic's PMIC family manager. Over the past decade, we have helped customers around the world easily connect things to the Internet. It makes sense that we can also help the same customers charge batteries for the same items and further extend battery life. The final platform leverages Nordic's low-power expertise combined with proven technology modules to provide additional ways to save energy. We kicked things off by offering a power management device for small applications that charges small batteries and provides efficient power management when physical space is extremely valuable."
The new PMIC comes with an " nPM1100 Review Kit" that features switches for all optional settings, buttons for entering and exiting transport mode, and connectors for the battery, USB, and connectors for all pins on the PMIC. The connectors allow the switches to be overridden if software control needs to be configured. This evaluation kit allows the use of existing application equipment to test the functionality of the nPM1100 PMIC without the need to create custom hardware. Users can be powered from USB via the on-board micro-USB port, from an external DC power supply via the header pins, or from a battery power supply via the battery connector on one of the headers. This review kit is designed to work with other Nordic development kits, or with other non-Nordic product reviews.
