Programmable, Compact and Efficient Zero Voltage Switching Power Supply ICs
Power Integrations introduces the InnoSwitch™4-Pro series of digitally controllable offline CV/CC zero-voltage switching (ZVS) flyback ICs that can significantly reduce the size of power adapters. These highly integrated devices feature a robust PowiGaN gallium nitride primary switch with a steady-state switching frequency of up to 140kHz, reducing component count and PCB board area.
“The InnoSwitch4-ProIC works seamlessly with Power Integrations’ ClampZero family of active clamp ICs to achieve ZVS in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM),” said Aditya Kulkarni, Product Marketing Manager, Power Integrations. Combining ZVS with our PowiGaN™ technology virtually eliminates switching losses. Its efficiency of over 95 percent enables designers to eliminate heat sinks, heat spreaders and potting materials typically required for thermal management."
The size of the adapter can be further reduced by using the MinE-CAP™ device in addition to the InnoSwitch4-Pro and the ClampZero IC. MinE-CAP ICs are also based on PowiGaN technology, which reduces the size of the input capacitor by about 40%.
Capable of delivering up to 220W, the InnoSwitch4-Pro IC integrates a 750V PowiGaN primary switch, controller, FluxLink™ reinforced insulation feedback link for secondary side control, I2C in an ultra-thin InSOP™-28 package interface, active clamp drive, and synchronous rectification. High integration can greatly simplify the development and manufacture of fully numerically controlled high-efficiency power supplies. Paired with ClampZero and MinE-CAP companion devices, these digitally controllable flyback ICs address the ultra-compact and low-profile form factors that are highly demanded for OEM, non-genuine USB PD and Universal Fast Charge Specification (UFCS) adapter market applications design requirements. UFCS is a new standard released by China Communications Standards Association.
InnoSwitch4-Pro IC uses a unique control method to achieve ZVS in both DCM and CCM. When used with the ClampZero IC, this control method supports higher operating frequencies without loss of efficiency. When the InnoSwitch4-Pro product is used alone, it also supports quasi-resonant switching operation in both DCM and CCM modes. DCM-only operation is optional to reduce SR FET voltage stress. The new IC also has an optimized command set to reduce the possibility of I2C data congestion.
InnoSwitch4-Pro flyback switching IC can provide excellent constant voltage/constant current accuracy, not affected by peripheral components, and when providing safety and protection functions such as input voltage detection, its no-load power consumption is less than 30mW. The device is comprehensively protected with auto-restart or latching fault response for output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, as well as multiple output undervoltage fault thresholds, latching or hysteretic primary overtemperature protection, and output Bus switch short circuit protection
