New Ultra-Compact Multiturn Rotary Encoders
Automated functions have become an integral part of mobile machinery. These features not only increase the productivity of the machine, reduce the burden on the vehicle operator, but most importantly, ensure safety. Here, precise and safe sensor technology is a top priority. At the same time integrating sensors in applications with limited installation space is a challenge. For this reason, sensor specialist SIKO presents ultra-compact sensors for mobile machinery: the new absolutely safe multiturn rotary encoders WV3600MR and WH3600MR.
With a diameter of only 36 mm, the WV3600MR and WH3600MR are the most compact safety multiturn rotary encoders available for mobile machinery applications. Safety is paramount: both provide position and velocity values in accordance with SIL2 (IEC 61508) PLd (DIN EN ISO 13849) and not only for 360°. Thanks to the mechatronic multiturn system, the encoder has a maximum measuring range of 65,536 revolutions (16 bits). They are based on a non-contact magnetic measuring system and do not require battery power. As a result, it is maintenance-free for many years, even when mobile machinery is exposed to harsh conditions and extreme temperatures.

The WV3600MR with solid shaft and WH3600MR with hollow shaft are based on the SIKO sensor platform PURE.MOBILE, whose components have been specially developed for commercial vehicles. Both encoders are therefore exceptionally robust and durable. They are highly resistant to shock and vibration and can withstand axial and radial shaft loads up to 200 N. In addition, they are certified (E1) by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority according to UN ECE R10. Thanks to their salt spray-resistant housing, high degree of protection IP67 and optionally IP6K9K, and UV resistance, they are able to withstand harsh environmental conditions, which is an important prerequisite for a long service life of mobile machinery.
Smart and Secure Communications
Both encoders are optionally available with a CANopen Safety interface and in the future also an SAE J1939-76 (Safety) interface. The status of the device is indicated by the LED light integrated in the plug. This is especially helpful for debugging and servicing. In addition to providing reliable position and speed data, these sensors can also provide data related to the condition of the sensor or machine through other intelligent functions. Both rotary encoders are available with optional M12 plugs or output cables, as well as DEUTSCH or AMP Superseal plugs for these sensors. Due to the innovative housing design of the encoder, the electrical connection can be made axially or radially, so that no installation space is wasted.
