Melexis Releases New Motor Driver Chip to Dramatically Improve Electromechanical Thermal Management in Electric Vehicles

2023-08-05 14:46:44

Melexis is a global leader in the automotive semiconductor sensor industry, with an average of 18 of our chips in every new car produced globally.Melexis leverages its core experience in automotive electronics to aggressively serve other markets, including mobile mobility, smart devices, smart buildings, robotics, energy management and digital health.

Melexis' newest motor driver chip, the MLX81334, dramatically optimizes EV thermal valves (for precise battery temperature control) and expansion valves (for heat pump cooling cycles) to significantly increase EV range. with expanded memory and OTA (Over-the-Air) support, the MLX81334 further completes Melexis' portfolio of embedded motor driver chips that deliver advanced software features.

The LIN-based motor driver chip MLX81334 is rated at 1A and can be deployed in electromechanical thermal management systems. This single-chip device can efficiently drive small DC motors, DC brushless motors or stepper motors. Each chip features an embedded microcontroller with a 16-bit application processor and a standalone communications processor, four FET half-bridge drivers, as well as data conversion circuitry and a LIN or serial interface. 64KB of on-chip memory in the MLX81334 (32KB in the MLX81332) provides plenty of memory to run more complex software and allows for more safe diagnostic functions, allowing for easy access to critical calibration data. The MLX81334 has 64KB of on-chip memory (32KB for the MLX81332), providing ample memory to run more sophisticated software and enable more secure diagnostic functions. The MLX81334 also supports OTA updates.

Leveraging Melexis' expertise in high-voltage Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology, the driver combines excellent operational stability with a high level of functional integration to deliver high power operation in a compact form factor. The device takes up very little board space and can be used in space-critical electromechanical deployments.

Melexis' driver chip, the MLX81334, is available in a 5mm × 5mm 32-pin QFN package for 12V and 24V automotive systems, with integrated over-temperature, over-current, over-voltage and under-voltage protection.
