USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) has become the mainstream standard for fast charging and powering a variety of mobile and battery-powered devices using the unified Type-C connector. In the newly released USB-PD rev 3.1 standard, the Extended Power Range (EPR) specification supports a wide output voltage range and high power transmission. Uniformity and high power capacity coupled with small form factor for low system cost have been the main drivers for the development of the adapter and charger market. To accelerate this trend, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) presents the new XDP™ digital power supply XDPS2221. This highly integrated combo controller IC for USB-PD supports high power wide input and output voltage applications with output voltage up to 28V.

The device integrates an AC-DC power factor correction (PFC) controller and a DC-DC hybrid flyback controller (HFB) (also known as an asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) flyback controller) in a single package controller), by coordinating the operation of these two levels, regulatory requirements can be easily met. In addition, external BOM cost and component count are reduced due to further integration of all gate drivers and a 600V high-voltage start-up unit for initial IC voltage supply, as well as a certified active X-capacitor discharge circuit. Based on a new Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) HFB topology combined with Gallium Nitride devices, this product is capable of delivering class-leading efficiency over a wide range of line/load conditions. With these features and inherent topological advantages such as zero-voltage switching, resonant energy transfer for smaller transformer sizes, systems designed using the XDPS2221 can achieve extremely high power densities.

In addition, the new combo IC enables simultaneous PFC and HFB burst mode operation, resulting in the lowest no-load standby input power performance. Enhanced quasi-resonant multimode PFC with auto-enable/disable function and adaptive bus voltage control maximizes average and light load efficiency. Additionally, the integrated PFC function can be optionally disabled for use with any type of external PFC controller.

The hybrid flyback stage achieves robust regulation and fast dynamic load response through peak current controlled operation. To ensure ZVS operation under all conditions, the hybrid flyback stage incorporates a ZVS pulse insertion function, which also includes preventing body diode cross-conduction in discontinuous conduction mode. The XDPS2221 also provides easy-to-configure parameters through a graphical user interface to optimize system performance.
