STMicroelectronics releases flexible and variable isolated buck converter chip to protect power conversion and gate drive of IGBT, SiC and GaN transistors
The L6983i 10W isolated step-down (iso-buck) converter chip from STMicroelectronics has the advantages of high energy efficiency, compact size, low quiescent current, and wide input voltage of 3.5V-38V.
Suitable for applications requiring an isolated DC-DC converter, the L6983i uses an isolated buck topology that requires fewer external components than traditional isolated flyback converters and does not require an optocoupler, saving BOM cost and PCB area .
Other advantages of the L6983i include 2µA shutdown current, integrated soft-start time adjustable, internal loop compensation, power good indication, and protective functions such as over-current protection and thermal shutdown. Spread spectrum optional feature improves EMC electromagnetic compatibility.
The source/sink current of L6983i is up to 4.5A primary current, the switching frequency can be adjusted from 200kHz to 1MHz, and it can also choose to synchronize with an external clock. The new products are used to power isolated gate drivers for IGBT, silicon carbide (SiC) or gallium nitride (GaN) power transistors for industrial automation, low power electric drive systems, charging stations and isolated safety equipment.
