New air pressure sensor that is not afraid of harsh environmental conditions

2023-08-21 14:49:19

Barometric pressure sensors are a key component in wearables for fitness tracking and other applications, enabling accurate determination of altitude. Bosch Sensortec presents the new BMP585 barometric pressure sensor. The BMP585 is a robust and reliable barometric pressure sensor that can be used underwater and in harsh environments, such as swimming wearables.

The BMP585 is equipped with a liquid-resistant gel cover for wearables exposed to water or other liquids, including salt water and chlorinated pool water from swimming pools. It includes all the features of Bosch's existing BMP581 pressure sensor, delivering best-in-class accuracy while delivering the exceptional robustness needed to enable new use cases. Its extremely low power consumption helps extend battery life in wearables, hearables, and portable applications.

"With the BMP585, OEMs don't need to sacrifice performance to ensure a robust device - no more compromises! The sensor is highly accurate and sensitive to centimeter-level height changes, enabling accurate monitoring in fitness applications Even individual pull-ups or push-ups can be distinguished. At the same time, the sensor is so robust and reliable that users can use it with confidence in any environmental conditions,” says Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec.

Carefree and ready for adventure: BMP585 can provide reliable map data for hiking or running trips, including distance and altitude, to assist GPS data and ensure accurate positioning and navigation.

The BMP585 is also resistant to water and chemicals, making it ideal for many industrial uses such as liquid level detection. Its sealed design also prevents dust intrusion, so it is also suitable for clogging detection in household appliances such as vacuum cleaners.

Best-in-class performance, ultra-low power consumption

The BMP585 is similar to Bosch's existing BMP581 and offers best-in-class performance. It has a relative accuracy of up to +/-0.06 hPa and a typical absolute accuracy of +/-0.5 hPa. The typical temperature coefficient offset (TCO) of BMP585 is only +/-0.5 Pa/K, and the RMS noise is as low as 0.08 Pa @ 1000 hPa (typ.). The 12 month long term drift is only +/-0.2 hPa.

With a typical current consumption of only 1.3 μA at a 1 Hz data rate, the sensor significantly extends battery life. BMP585 provides I2C, I3C and SPI digital serial interfaces.

The BMP585 is housed in a compact 9-pin LGA package with a metal lid and measures only 3.25 mm x 3.25 mm x 1.86 mm³, making it suitable for smart watches and other wearable devices.

BMP585 has excellent liquid resistance

  • Ideal for a variety of altitude tracking applications in harsh conditions
  • Excellent precision, low noise performance
  • Ultra-low power consumption for extended battery life
