Murata to Commercialize Ultrasonic Sensors for ADAS with 15cm Proximity Detection

2023-08-16 13:54:19

Murata has developed a waterproof ultrasonic sensor "MA48CF15-7N" for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) with a detection distance of 15 to 550 cm

With the increasing accuracy of ADAS in recent years, higher detection performance requirements have been put forward for obstacle detection systems for automatic braking and automatic parking. Ultrasonic sensors equipped in obstacle detection systems need to have high detection accuracy at both short and long distances, and have small tolerances in resonance frequency and electrostatic capacity to stabilize the accuracy.

Murata's traditional products (MA55AF15 series) have a detection range of 30 to 500 cm, but this product can perform short-distance and long-distance detection of 15 to 550 cm by optimizing materials and structural design. At the same time, compared with traditional products, the resonance frequency and Capacitance tolerances are reduced by 50%(1). In addition, by reducing the Q(2) of the sensor and standardizing the Q tolerance, the frequency bandwidth can be kept constant, and it is easier to support the pulse compression method IC that has become the mainstream in recent years.

Main Features

Improved detection performance at short and long distances: Short and long distance detection from 15 to 550 cm is possible, contributing to improved accuracy of obstacle detection.

Stabilized detection accuracy by narrowing the tolerances of resonant frequency and electrostatic capacity: The tolerances of resonant frequency and electrostatic capacity have been reduced by 50% compared to conventional products, which reduces individual variations in detection accuracy.

Improvement of usability in manufacturing processes through low Q and standardization of Q tolerances: To support pulse compression method ICs, low Q and standardization of Q tolerances make it easier to match circuits. (Moreover, low Q also contributes to improved temperature characteristics.)
