Melexis Introduces Smaller, Fully Integrated LIN Driver Chip
Melexis introduces the MLX81160, a new LIN pre-driver chip for relay-controlled DC motor applications. The chip is the latest member of Melexis's third-generation compatible embedded motor driver chip series, which combines high power, compact design and high cost performance. The product provides 48 KB of memory (16 KB ROM for built-in LIN protocol, 32 KB flash for application software)
The MLX81160 is AEC-Q100 qualified and integrates in a single chip all the necessary functional elements required for motor driving, including a LIN interface, an embedded microcontroller unit, 6 PWM drivers, 3 high-voltage I/Os, and more.
Additional I/O is used to connect to a dedicated 4-wire latch for motor indexing. Melexis will soon introduce a new 4-wire latch, the MLX92352, with innovative features that will greatly increase application flexibility. Combined with MLX81160, it will constitute a complete sensing and driving solution.
The MLX81160 is housed in a compact 4 mm × 4 mm QFN24 package. When used in advanced mechatronics applications, the chip can be integrated into extremely compact PCBs.
In addition to its increased performance, reduced cost and extremely small size, the MLX81160 offers several other important advantages. For example, faster programming (programming can be completed in 2.5 seconds for 32 KB flash memory) and meeting ASIL B level functional safety requirements. In addition, the dual current sensing function supports ripple counting and can drive multiple DC motors simultaneously.
"The MLX81160 offers a great price/performance ratio, enabling our Tier 1 customers to develop highly competitive mechatronic systems for their automotive OEM partners. It brings the benefits of a digital interface to price-sensitive DC motors, Such as window lifters for mid-range cars, etc." Marc Lambrechts, product line manager of embedded motor driver chips at Melexis, said: "Our experienced team of embedded application engineers can fully support customers to complete the correct design of the project at the first time, and assist in promoting Complete projects faster."
