Industry control systems must maintain a minimum error rate even in harsh environments, so safe and reliable system development is essential. The AURIX™ TC3x and TRAVEO™ T2G microcontroller product families from Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) fulfil these requirements with a wide range of integrated hardware functional safety and cyber security features. Both product families have expanded support for the IEC 61508 hardware and software specifications, including all documentation required for functional safety certification. In addition, the Infineon AUTOSAR microcontroller MCAL underlying driver software product also supports IEC 61508.

In addition to its success in the mobile mobility market, the Infineon AUTOSAR MCAL is now used to enable many other functional safety applications, including indoor applications such as medical equipment, industrial drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), robotics, lifts or machinery. With the AUTOSAR standard being used in areas other than automotive applications, we can now offer our customers AUTOSAR MCAL software files supporting the IEC 61508 standard," said Ralf Koedel, Vice President Microcontroller Product Line at Infineon Technologies. The requirements for industrial control systems have become more stringent as such systems must maintain a minimum error rate in harsh environments. However, with the extension of support for the AURIX and TRAVEO families to the IEC 61508 standard, developers can design safety-critical applications using a range of proven microcontrollers and refer to existing diagnostic analysis files (FMEDA and safety manuals)."

The Failure Mode Effects and Failure Mode Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) file creates a static snapshot showing IEC 61508 failure rates and safety metrics calculated at the MCU and basic function level. By extending support for the AURIX TC3x and TRAVEO T2G microcontrollers from ISO26262 to IEC61508, developers can raise the safety level of industrial applications to SIL-1-3. In addition, semiconductor technology company Infineon has established a strong ecosystem of design partners to clear the way for safety-critical designs at the SIL-4 level and provide reliable support in functional safety certification.
