Intel's Consumer CPU Market Share Grows 23% in Q2 2023 While AMD Declines 5.3%

Jon Peddie Research reports that the client CPU market appears to have broken its downward trend, with Intel taking the lead over AMD. Intel has gained market share in the client CPU market, while AMD has lost market share: the first time in two years that the segment has seen positive growth.

The consumer CPU market has long been on a downward spiral. Both Intel and AMD have seen significant losses since the pandemic and global economic situation, but that changed this quarter as the market showed signs of recovery.

According to the latest statistics released by Jon Peddie Research, shipments of PC client CPUs reached 53.6 million units in the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 17% over the previous quarter, while shipments of iGPUs grew by 14% (49 million units). The notebook market dominated with a 72 percent share, while desktop CPUs shipped accounted for only 28 percent, a slight decline from the prior year quarter.

Shipments of all client-based chips were down 23 percent from the year-ago quarter, a figure that still looks somewhat bleak. Desktop CPU shipments were down -25% and laptop shipments were down -22%. As for AMD and Intel, the red team's market share fell by -5.3%, while Intel's share grew by 23%. This is largely due to Intel's greater focus on entry-level and mainstream chips, while AMD CPUs are focused exclusively on high-end users.

Jon Peddie, president of JPR, noted, "Client CPU shipments were up in the second quarter over the previous quarter, which is positive and welcome news in the context of that quarter and the last two years of discouraging results. Shipments of integrated graphics were also up from the previous quarter, which is not remarkable given that most CPUs have built-in graphics. Forecasts for the next quarter are a cautionary positive. both AMD and Intel are forecasting upwards, albeit modestly."

However, that could soon change as AMD introduces more mainstream options in its Ryzen CPU lineup, and the release of the Phoenix Ryzen 7040 APU will help boost its shipments. Meanwhile, Intel is preparing its Raptor Lake Refresh CPU lineup for desktops and Meteor Lake CPUs for laptops, which will be a major growth factor for the company in the second half of 2023
